Every year in July, NAIDOC Week celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, heritage and community and this year the focus is on the Dreamtime.
Campbelltown Council, which has been a strong supporter of NAIDOC Week over the years, will once again be leading the way.
This year NAIDOC Week is on from July 3 to July 10, with events across the region aimed at bringing the entire community together.
The theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week is Songlines: The living narrative of our nation, which celebrates the Dreamtime – when it is believed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders that the earth, land forms, people and animals were created by spiritual ancestral beings.
The Dreaming is marked by tracks all across Australia that show the journeys of these beings, with these tracks sometimes referred to as songlines – recording the journeys of ancestral spirits who sung the land into life.
By learning more about songlines and the role they played in connecting people to country and the country to people, we can celebrate the rich history and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures – the oldest continuing cultures on the planet.
As part of local NAIDOC Week celebrations, Campbelltown Council invites the community to attend a morning tea and flag raising ceremony in council’s forecourt from 9.30am on Monday, July 4.
This will be followed by a street march to Bradbury Oval for the annual Community Fun Day event.
On Wednesday, July 6, Macquarie Fields Local Area Command will host the NAIDOC Touch Football competition at Sarah Redfern Oval.
