A new era is about to dawn for the 8,000 people with disabilities who call Campbelltown home.

Over the next four years Campbelltown will be transformed into one of the most disability friendly and inclusive regions in the country.

Campbelltown Council will deliver services and facilities which are more accessible to people with disability.

Over the four year life of the recently launched Disability Inclusion Action Plan, council will also promote positive attitudes to disability inclusion

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic, said the comprehensive action plan was developed after extensive consultation with the local community.

He said there had been 350 responses, both face-to-face and through written surveys, from locals living with disability, their support networks, and the wider community.

“The plan aims to ensure that the almost 8,000 people in Campbelltown City who identify as needing assistance in their day-to-day lives due to disability, are able to participate in and contribute to our community to their fullest potential,” he said.

“As part of the plan, council will also partner with Touched by Olivia and Stockland to design and build an all abilities, inclusive playground – Livvi’s Place – at Willowdale,” he said.

“The plan also undertakes to increase the number of adult change facilities in public toilets, and will consider the provision of an adult change facility in the planning and delivery of our next regional play space.”

The plan was launched at Campbelltown Arts Centre on Wednesday, August 23.

Campbelltown City Council is now seeking expressions of interest from residents living with disability, carers and service providers to join an advisory group to guide the implementation of the Campbelltown Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2017-2021.

Cr Brticevic said the establishment of an advisory group to help implement the actions outlined within the plan demonstrated council’s commitment to breaking down barriers and creating a more liveable community for people with disability.

Expressions of interest to join the Disability Inclusion Action Plan Advisory Group must be made by 5pm on Friday, September 15.
