For 16 years Rosemeadow resident Janet Drayton has dedicated herself to helping raise money for those in need through the Campbelltown Hospital Auxiliary.

But it was still a shock when she was presented with a NSW Community Service Award as recognition for her volunteer work.

Mrs Drayton and other members of the auxiliary team were holding their market day at the hospital when Mr Warren dropped by and surprised Mrs Drayton with the honour.

 “I’m just overwhelmed,’’ she said.

“Sixteen years ago a friend asked me to come along to auxiliary and see what they did and I thought ‘yes, that’s what I should do’.

“All these people (fellow members) have kept me coming back to the auxiliary for the past 16 years,” Mrs Drayton said.

The NSW Community Service Award recognises individuals who have substantially helped improve the lives of those within their community.

During her 16 years as a member of the Campbelltown Hospital Auxiliary, Mrs Drayton has held the position of president five years and secretary three years.

She has also served the auxiliary as assistant secretary and vice president.

“Campbelltown really is blessed to have an abundance of selfless, dedicated and passionate individuals like Jan in our community,’’ Mr Warren said after presenting the award to Mrs Drayton.

“Jan did not join the Campbelltown Hospital Auxiliary for the accolades, she joined simply to help people in need – and that is exactly what she has done for the past 16 years.

“Jan really does epitomise what that famous Campbelltown community spirit is all about.

“Surprising people like Jan with awards like the NSW Community Service Award is one of the greatest perks of my job.

“Well done Jan – this award is truly deserved.”
