More than 8,000 students attend Catholic schools in the Macarthur region.
Their academic performance is expected to go up a notch with the opening of the Emmaus Centre in the Catholic Education Centre for Macarthur in Allman Street, Campbelltown.
The Emmaus Centre is a place of welcome, gathering and learning for children, young people and educators working together to improve learning outcomes.
It includes a student activity and innovation centre, meeting and conference rooms, information and communication technologies.
It is also home to more than 20 CEO specialist staff who work closely in local Catholic schools, offering support in the areas of student learning and wellbeing.
Campbelltown MP Greg Warren, who attended last week’s official opening and blessing by the Bishop of Wollongong, Peter Ingham, praised the investment in facilities such as the Emmaus Centre.
“It is great to see the commitment of Catholic education growing on our region,’’ he said.
“It’s fantastic to have such a strong and unified diocese facilitating Campbelltown students who are passionate advocates of their faith and community – whether that’s in their school community or the broader Campbelltown community.
“I welcome the Emmaus Centre as a facility that will undoubtedly become an asset for the Campbelltown community.”
The Diocese of Wollongong is one of 11 in NSW.
It stretches from Camden and Campbelltown in the growing Macarthur region down the coast of the Illawarra and the Shoalhaven regions, to as far as Milton and Ulladulla.
Currently there are 29 Catholic Parish Primary Schools and eight systemic Catholic Co-Educational Secondary Schools in the diocese.
Of these various institutions, seven are congregational secondary schools, one of which provides for students with special needs.
