Campbelltown residents are invited to join communities around the globe in celebrating Earth Hour this Saturday, March 24 at Campbelltown Arts Centre’s amphitheatre.
Council will host “Heart and Soil’’ from 6pm to 9.30pm, and is inviting residents of all ages and cultural backgrounds to enjoy activities and performances which reflect traditional and contemporary ways of connecting with the natural environment.
The free event will include family-friendly activities from 6pm including Indigenous inspired chalk pavement art, traditional ochre face painting, seed collecting with The Australian Botanic Garden Education Team and star gazing with the Macarthur Astronomical Society.
Performances will follow with dancing and fire twirling by Matavai Cultural Arts and an acoustic set by local musician Karleigh Rose Smith. There will also be an Aboriginal smoking ceremony and storytelling.
During Earth Hour, participants will be invited to take a seat around a fire pit, meet new people and join in conversations, or simply enjoy the tranquillity under a starry sky in the amphitheatre or grassed area.
Earth Hour started as a lights-off event in Sydney in 2007 to draw attention to climate change, and has grown to include more than 172 countries and more than 7,000 cities and towns worldwide.
Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic, said Earth Hour was a great opportunity for the community to come together to enjoy a variety of activities, while learning more about the environment and sustainable living.
