Camden Arcade is celebrating 25 years with a photographic exhibition.

To celebrate its 25th year as the hub of Camden, the Camden Arcade is playing host to a display of photos documenting the town’s rich history.

Officially opened in 1992, the arcade was built at a cost of $4 million and has since prospered to become a prominent part of Camden’s shopping precinct and home to many local businesses, including a bakery, cafes, restaurants and other shops.

The milestone was recently celebrated with an official function, where owner Chris Scoufis thanked the tenants and customers for their support.

“We are very proud of what we have achieved over the years and of our contribution to the Camden community,” he said.

The celebrations continue with a photographic exhibition showcasing the history of Camden, which is on display throughout the arcade.

The photographs were sourced from the archives of the Camden Museum and document the changes the town has seen since its beginnings in 1840, when the sons of colonial entrepreneur John Macarthur sold land allotments and provisions were made for the erection of a church and an inn.

By 1883, the population grew to more than 300 and the town has continued to grow ever since while retaining its picturesque, rural feel.

The photographs will continue to be on display until the end of the year.
