Fifteen young skate, scooter and BMX riders will be given the opportunity to become qualified coaches in their chosen sport through a new learn to ride academy in Campbelltown.
Expressions of interest for the Campbelltown Skate, Scooter and BMX Learn to Ride Coaching Academy open this Friday, December 16, for people aged between 16 and 25 years, who live work or study in the Campbelltown Local Government Area.
Campbelltown City Council secured $40,000 in funding from the NSW Government to run the 15-week coaching academy, which will see young people from the local community become equipped with the skills and knowledge to deliver high quality programs, showcases and competitions across Campbelltown skate facilities, to other young people.
Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic, said council’s strong relationships with local skate, scooter and BMX riders was intrinsic to the development of skate facilities across Campbelltown, and the coaching academy would build on these relationships.
“We have three wonderful facilities at Leumeah, St Helens Park and Macquarie Fields, and this funding will now allow us to develop the talent and ideas of our young people to ensure the whole community gets the most out of these facilities through grassroots programs and activities,” he said.
“This project will get more young people involved in community activities, and will provide the coaches it produces with a range of skills which will make them more employable, to deliver specialised coaching programs in their respective disciplines.
“It will also give young women the chance to engage and participate in male dominated sports.”
At the completion of the course, coaches will receive accreditation through TAFE NSW – South West Sydney Institute and the NSW Office of Sport and Recreation, in their respective disciplines of skate, scooter and BMX.
Expressions of Interest will close at 4.30pm on Friday, January 20, 2017.
