BMX and cricket are the big winners from extra funding that has become available in the Camden area.
Camden Council has announced that it will redirect $2.1 million which was previously set aside to partner with the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) to develop a facility at Kirkham Park.
Council says the club asked not to proceed with the project.
But council will not pocket the $2.1 million – it will inject it all into new facilities for BMX and cricket.
Funding for the Macarthur BMX project will be increased by $1 million to $1.67 million and involve expanding the track size and upgrading the facilities at its Kirkham Park, Elderslie course site.
The project is in the early concept phase and will form part of the Kirkham Park Masterplan design to be completed later this year.
Council will also increase the amount of money allocated for stage one of the Fergusons Land Cricket Project at Camden by $1.1 million to $4.45 million.
This project is proposed to include the staged development of three cricket ovals, amenities and parking.
Council will progress the planning and design of these projects this year with the respective sporting organisations.
“This money will be used to deliver quality new facilities and support the diversity of sporting activities available to our community,” said Mayor Lara Symkowiak.
“It is the ambition of Council to develop recreation facilities of an exceptional standard to meet the needs of our growing population and reduce the need for residents to travel out of the area to participate and compete in sports,” Cr Symkowiak said.
“We want to support an active and healthy lifestyle in our community and provide sporting venues that will attract visitors to our area,” she said.
I hope the new cricket ovals will have a turf wicket and then the Ghosts may be able to play some of their games at Camden
