Glenn Kirkwood, creator and owner of That Referral Guy, jumps into the South West Voice Business Q&A hot seat for this instalment in our series.
What is the main lessons in business you have learnt?
Back yourself. If you don’t give it a go, you’ll never make it. At the very least, you’ll learn a valuable lesson and will be able to apply that to future successes.
What is your crowning achievement so far?
Have built a very successful franchise with happy clients that almost runs itself. This success has allowed me the freedom to be even more daring and when I saw an opportunity to help our clients in another area (online coaching) I partnered with a business coach and built an online training centre.
Who is your business hero – living or dead?
Business hero is my dad. Unfortunately he passed away a few months ago. Whilst I didn’t have any contact with my father for some time as my parents got divorced when I was 12, when we did reconnect we built the relationship to a point where we spoke 2-3 times a day. He was able to give me feedback, guidance and encouragement when I needed a push. I miss him very much.
What is your favourite business book?
Jab, Jab, Jab Right Hook by Gary V. I love this guy because he loves to watch people, trends and enjoys the hustle of business. We live in a time where people that sit on the fence finish last and the people that speak up for things they believe in get noticed and attract a following.
Favourite quote?
You can have anything you want in life so long as you help enough other people first – Zig Ziglar.
What everyday thing are you better at than everyone else? What’s your secret?
Listening or rather active listening.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Learn how to contribute to the lives of others. I do this using the platinum rule which is to treat others the way they want to be treated.
