It’s ours: Quins win the lineout in the women’s clash with Parramatta at Campbelltown Showground. Pictures by Rubie Crofts.

The Harlequins women’s team may have been defeated on the scoreboard in its clash with Parramatta on the weekend, but they should be proud with the effort they put in.

The Quins started the match strongly and defended their line for more than 10 minutes in a stout effort.

However the Wallaroo players within the Parramatta team slowly started to gain the ascendancy.

The Parramatta girls eventually crossed for a try and this started a scoring spree that enabled Parramatta to run in another four tries before halftime.

The Harlequins girls however continued to defend well and only costly handling mistakes turned the ball over to Parramatta to continue to exert pressure on the Campbelltown girls.

The second half saw an even contest with Parramatta limited to one try until late into the second half.

However with a few injuries and the reserves all used for Campbelltown, the Parramatta team finished too strong to cross for another three tries. Final result was 61 0.

Stand outs for Campbelltown were Sally Fuesaina, Brenda Auelua and Kato Mahina.

The girls will be at home to Sydney University this Saturday.

♦ The Harlequins men travelled to Woonona on Saturday to take on Shamrocks in first, second and third grade.

The club returned from the Illawarra rugby premiership round 5 trip with mixed results.

Harlequins first grade seemed to struggle for most of the match before stealing victory at the death.

Shamrocks played an expansive game and managed the first try after only 10 minutes. Shamrocks led at halftime 14 – 10.

The Harlequin side managed to toil through the second half, taking the lead with 12 minutes to go.

Then with Harlequins hard on attack, Shamrocks pounced on a mistake and ran an almost length of the field try to take the lead 30 points to 28 with only five  minutes left on the clock.

In a mighty effort the Harlequins worked their way into the Shamrocks half and from close to the line captain Adam Choice barged over for the final try of the match. Choice converted his own try to make the final score 35 to 30 Harlequins way.

Tries went to Mark June, Nathan Glynn, Malakai Fukofuka and Adam Choice.

Villami Matu was awarded Harlequins man of the match.

• Next week the Harlequins are at home for a top of the table clash against Avondale. Both teams will come into this game as the only two undefeated sides in the competition.

Games start at 12.20pm with first grade kick off at 3pm.

♦ In second grade, this game also went down to the wire in another very close encounter.

Harlequins led throughout the match to finish with a two try 12 – 10 victory.

Debutant fullback Marty Askew scored the two Harlequin tries with one conversion from Stephen Cook.

Vili Onesi was voted man of the match.

♦ Third grade had another disappointing day with Shamrocks running away with a 33 – 8 win.

Harlequins remain winless  in third grade this season with two bonus points.

Noa Raura scored the only Harlequin try and John Soloi converted.

Man of the match for Harlequins was Noa Raura.
