In what could be some sort of a record, more than 650 Campbelltown residents will be presented with their Australian citizenship during seven ceremonies held throughout August.

Sixty seven countries of origin are represented among the residents receiving their citizenship.

Mayor George Greiss presented the first of the ceremonies at the Cambelltown Civic Hall on Saturday, pictured above.

“The day you receive your citizenship is among the most important in the lives of many people so I’m very proud that we are able to present so many people with their citizenship over the next few weeks,” Cr Greiss said.

“The process of getting citizenship requires a great deal of effort and commitment so it really is a special moment when you finally receive the certificate,” he said.

“Thank you to all the residents who joined us at our first ceremonies over the weekend and I look forward to meeting more of our new citizens over the coming weeks.”

A further three ceremonies will be held on Saturday 27 August and a final ceremony on Monday 29 August.

Citizenship ceremonies were severely impacted by restrictions on gatherings imposed during the past two and a half years.

  • In related news, at last night’s meeting Campbelltown Council adopted the terms of reference for the newly established Multicultural Communities Advisory Committee.

The committee was proposed by councillors earlier this year.

On May 10, Mayor Councillor Greiss chaired the first meeting with other councillors to develop the vision for the committee.

On July 19, Councillor Masud Khalil chaired a second meeting to discuss a draft of the terms of reference.

The purpose of the new committee is to provide advice to council on multiculturalism and social cohesion issues such as cultural, linguistic and spiritual diversity.

Council can then progress its work in ensuring all residents can participate in local community life and that its plans, actions and strategies are inclusive and give voice to all residents of Campbelltown.
