Roses are nearly in bloom and if you ask Ian and Maureen Thackery now is the perfect time to make your entry into Camden Council’s 2022 garden competition.

The annual competition offers $3,000 worth of prizes for residents, businesses and schools.

Ian and Maureen Thackery, who won the best floral display category with almost 400 roses in their garden in the 2020 garden competition, said one of the main tricks to winning was plenty of colour.

“The judges like colour in the garden and to keep it spick and span,’’ Mrs Thackery said.

“The gardens that have won over the years have been beautiful.

“You also have to carefully select the category that you are going to enter.

“Our hobby with roses has turned into a real passion.

“We started off with 10 roses years ago and it has just grown to about 380 to 400.”

There are eight categories for this year’s garden competition.

They are senior citizen garden, small residential, large residential, veggie garden/plot, best floral display, school/class plot, most sustainable garden and commercial garden.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said Camden was home to many beautiful gardens and called on residents to enter the competition.

“Spring is the perfect time to take care of your garden and I have been pleased to see so many people outside making their homes look so beautiful,” Cr Fedeli said.

“Council’s garden competition seeks to applaud the passion and dedication of our residents and recognise the importance of greenery throughout the area.”

Entries are open until Monday, October 10.
