Councils in Macarthur will receive more than $11 million for work on local roads, including construction and street repairs.

The money comes from the federal government’s Roads to Recovery program.

Local councils will soon be advised of their full allocations for the 2014-15 to 2018-19 program, said Macarthur MP Russell Matheson, who welcomed the delivery of $2.1 billion worth of roadworks under the program.

He said the allocation of more than $11 million for Macarthur was great news for local councils, residents and businesses.

“These funds will make a real difference in building roads, repairing streets and creating better access across our community,” Mr Matheson said.

“As announced in the 2014 Federal Budget, the Government is doubling Roads to Recovery payments to councils next year (2015-16) to $700 million, which will be a great windfall for much-needed local road works.

“The Roads to Recovery Program is set up for councils to make road spending decisions based on local needs, without interference from Canberra, to ensure that funding is truly directed to where it is most needed in the community.”

The breakdown for 2014-15 to 2018-19 includes:

  • Campbelltown City Council – $4,615,105
  • Camden Council – $2,896,915
  • Wollondilly Shire council – $3,615,572

Mr Matheson said local councils would receive their funding allocations in November.

“The Roads to Recovery programme enables councils to prioritise roads funding to invest in the infrastructure which keeps our drivers safe and strengthens economic growth,” he said.

“Through Roads to Recovery, the Australian Government is supporting our councils with the ongoing maintenance of Australia’s local road infrastructure, facilitating greater access, improving safety, and driving economic and social advances.”
