Local writers are invited to attend a half day writing workshop with leading author and historian Carol Baxter when a writers’ retreat offcially opens in Wedderburn next month.

Campbelltown City Council and WestWords will launch the Campbelltown Writers’ Retreat, a new cultural facility at Wedderburn Resource Centre, on Saturday, November 11.

Located a little over 10 kilometres from the centre of Campbelltown, the retreat will help support the development of talented writers in western Sydney.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic, said he was pleased council had joined forces with WestWords to deliver the project.

“The Wedderburn Writers’ Retreat will provide aspiring and experienced local writers with access to the advice, support and tools they need to develop their skills, in an encouraging and peaceful environment,” he said.

Executive director of WestWords, Michael Campbell, said: “WestWords is thrilled to be working in partnership with Campbelltown City Council to create affordable creative spaces for writers of all genres and to contribute to the vibrant cultural landscape of the region.”

The launch coincides with a call-out for writers interested in writers’ retreat membership, which will provide a regular, tailored program of workshops and events.

In the coming months proposals will be sought from writers of all genres, for pieces celebrating the landscape, history and people of Campbelltown, with a publication scheduled for the city’s bicentenary in 2020.

The guiding philosophy of WestWords is a belief that the unique perspectives and stories of western Sydney deserve to be celebrated, developed in literature and shared with a wider audience.

WestWords aims to have the dedicated Writers’ Rooms provide access and support for writers for this purpose.

WestWords is a not-for-profit registered charity which supports western Sydney schools and communities through a diverse range of free and subsidised literature programs presented by professional writers and performers.

The WestWords Western Sydney writers’ rooms are a network of three writers’ rooms in Wedderburn, Parramatta and Katoomba, and are part of the Making Spaces initiative supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW.
