Working locally makes business sense

Local focus: Sharon Richards in her company office in Queen Street, Campbelltown

Sharon Richards is a typical young Campbelltown mum.

Three of her four children attend a local school, St Peters Anglican Primary.

But until April of this year, Sharon herself was spending a lot of time travelling to and from work in the inner city at Five Dock. She had been doing this for 14 years.

Again, a typical story for many locals, forced to spend a lot of their time travelling because there are just not enough local jobs.

Sharon, who has been living in Campbelltown since she was a teenager, is a tax agent focusing primarily in individuals with rental properties and small businesses.

But after 14 years travelling to the city for work and a young family to raise with her husband back home in Campbelltown, Sharon decided there had to be another way.

“I love the Campbelltown area so while I had an existing inner west client base I thought I would much rather have my business where I live,’’ Sharon said.

“Three things of importance to me are family, church and work.

“And to have them all locally was the ideal.’’

So in April Sharon made the big move on the work front by opening her own business right here in Campbelltown – S Richards Accounting & Taxation Pty Ltd, which is located at 12/261 Queen Street, behind the Noodle House.

[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“The big factor behind my decision was trying to manage having a young family and travelling to work in the inner city. It just takes up a lot of your time,’’ Sharon said.[/social_quote]

An extra benefit of working locally is more time to be involved in community activities in the kids’ school and the church.

“I am really glad I have done this,’’ Sharon says.

“I have now also become a JP and have joined the local chamber of commerce  because community is important and I don’t think enough people embrace this.’’
