The “makeover” of Argyle Street, Camden continues.

The next stage of improvement works to Argyle Street in Camden has got under way in January.

The focus of the $2.3 million upgrade project will be between Oxley Street and Murray Street and continue the design theme already complete between Oxley Street and Hill Street and Elizabeth Street and Edward Street.

All of the Jacaranda trees along the main street will remain and an additional mature Jacaranda will be planted as part of the landscaping.

The construction company, Statewide Civil, will conduct the works in stages ensuring that pedestrian and shop front access is maintained in the area at all times.

There will be some changes to traffic conditions and parking will be restricted in the immediate area with additional parking now available at the Oxley Street car park.

“Council is investing in our historic town centre and streetscape to enhance the safety and visual appeal for residents and visitors to the area,” said Mayor Lara Symkowiak.

“Much of these works are basic infrastructure upgrades which are needed to ensure pedestrian safety,” Cr Symkowiak said.

“The building materials have been chosen to complement the look of the heritage buildings and the diversity of architecture along the street front.

“The overall design supports the unique rural character of the town and the economic prosperity of this business centre,” she said.

The works will include:

• Widening and reconstruction of footpaths to improve footpath levels;

• Installation of new street furniture;

• Landscaping of the Murray Street roundabout;

• Additional trees (including one mature Jacaranda tree) and garden beds;

• Installation of new street lighting;

• Improved drainage.

Provisions have been made to ensure that the Australia Day celebrations will go ahead on Friday, January 26, as usual.
