Camden Campbelltown Ghosts have won two games in a row for the first time this season after toppling Sutherland on Saturday at Raby Sports Complex.
The six points earned have helped the Ghosts jump two spots up from last as they seek to avoid the dreaded wooden spoon in 2021-22.
They’re now on 14 points, just one more than the two sides below them, Blacktown and Hawkesbury, who are both on 13.
With four rounds left in the season, the Ghosts are not out of the woods yet, with some tough games ahead.
They don’t get much tougher than taking on Northern District, who are leading the 20 team competition.
At least the round 12 match this Saturday is at home, which will give the young Ghosts some added confidence following their consecutive victories.
But it will be a big test and only time will tell if the Ghosts will stand up to such a challenge.
They certainly did that on the weekend against Sutherland, when it all seemed lost but some special individual performances saved the day.
Ghosts won the toss and invited Sutherland to have first use of the pitch at Raby Sports Complex.
Fast bowler Luke Webb (pictured), who took 4 for 27 from his 10 overs, led the Ghosts attack, which at one stage had the visitors reeling at 7 for 87.
But they clawed their way to 128 all out, a total which would not have caused any anxiety in the Ghosts batting ranks.
But as is the way with these things, especially for a side full of youngsters, there was a wobbly start to the chase from the Ghosts, who lost four wickets for 35.
Middle order batters Aaron Muir (37), AR Mishra (18) and Blake Smith (19 not out) steadied the ship and guided the team to victory from 36 overs.
The final score was Ghosts 7/129.
- Neighbouring side Fairfield Liverpool Lions also recorded a win, defeating Gordon in an away match. Returning to form, Lions finished 5 for 340, then dismissed the home side for just 184.
