Campbelltown’s Wilma women’s health centre will be a big winner from a funding promise made by the Labor opposition – and local MP Greg Warren couldn’t be happier.

The commitment for $100 million over five years for 20 women’s health centres will mean guaranteed funding of $1 million a year for Wilma.

Mr Warren says the funding was an enormous win for the local centre and those that rely on its services.

“This announcement will allow Wilma staff to do what they do best – that is support women in need of assistance, not worry about funding applications,” he said.

“I have been fortunate to work closely with Wilma since first being elected the Member for Campbelltown in 2015.

“I have witnessed first hand the incredible work the staff do on a daily basis.

“They are compassionate, dedicated and essential not only to women in Campbelltown, but women throughout the entire wider Macarthur region,’’ said Mr Warren, who is pictured above distributing presents to Wilma as part of his 2022 Christmas toy drive.

The Labor commitment will double the current funding for the women’s health centres.

Women’s health centres across the state provide vital services – particularly for women who have experienced domestic violence.

Eighty per cent of women referred to the centres experience some form of domestic and family violence.

Seventy per cent are low income earners and 10 per cent identify as First Nations women.

The demand placed on the centres has increased in recent years, particularly during pandemic lockdowns.

NSW Labor’s commitment will ensure centres can increase staff retention and reduce wait lists for counselling.

It was also help lower the number of women turned away from services and reduce gaps in availability for local services.

Women’s health centres will also be able to adapt their services to emerging demographic trends and population growth and the complexity of presenting health issues.
