[dropcap]G[/dropcap]reater Sydney Commission has published the finalised Western City District Plan, outlining a vision for a liveable, productive and sustainable region.

Interim Western City District commissioner Geoff Roberts says the District Plan, one of five covering the Greater Sydney region, follows more than two years of direct engagement with over 25,000 Sydneysiders and more than 750,000 via social media.

“Now is the Western City District’s time to shine and this District Plan – a product of extraordinary collaboration across councils, communities, and other stakeholders – will help guide the decisions and changes we need to create the District this community deserves.

“The Western City District has enormous potential and this Plan addresses our high aspirations for it – more open and green spaces, a strong desire to thrive economically, vibrant and well-connected communities while recognising what residents love about the region,” Mr Roberts said.

The Western City District Plan will support the implementation of the Greater Sydney Region Plan, A Metropolis of Three Cities, at the local level.

Key elements of the Western City District Plan include:

  • Guiding the development of well-connected, walkable places that focus on quality public spaces;
  • Supporting the Western Sydney City Deal to transform the Western City District over the next 20 to 40 years by building on natural and community assets and developing a more contained Western City District with a greater choice of jobs, transport and services aligned with growth;
  • Protecting and enhancing the District’s green infrastructure, including South Creek, Georges River and Hawkesbury-Nepean river systems
  • Supporting healthy communities through enhancing the quality and access to diverse open spaces and opportunities for recreational physical activity;
  • Coordinating the work of stakeholders and government agencies in identified “collaboration areas’’ including Liverpool, Greater Penrith and Campbelltown Macarthur to deliver improved liveability, productivity and sustainability outcomes.

Greater Sydney Commission chief commissioner Lucy Turnbull said the Western City District Plan will set out the planning priorities and actions for improving the quality of life for residents as the District grows and changes.

“Behind all great cities of the world are great plans and Greater Sydney now has a region plan and five district plans, prepared concurrently with the Future Transport 2056 strategy and the State Infrastructure Strategy, to guide its future,” Ms Turnbull said.

“This is an ambitious plan, co-created with the people of Greater Sydney, and the Commission will continue to work collaboratively with councils and the community as we begin implementation.

“Our city’s future, as the home of our children, or grand-children and beyond, is too important for us not to embrace with absolute enthusiasm,” Ms Turnbull said.
