Fair to ask how much worse will this weather get

Just when we thought this climate change caper couldn’t get any worse, along comes a 1 in 500 years flood up north of the state.

The 1 in 100 years flood is something that we still find hard to get our heads around.

So to hear about a 1 in 500 years flood certainly makes you stand up and take notice.

Especially of you live in Campbelltown, which avoids major flooding when it rains heavily. Our Camden neighbours aren’t so lucky, suffering through some awful flooding in 2021 and 2022 (pictured above).

But before we start to pull our hair out, it’s worth remembering that no matter how bad a weather event is said to be, floods, droughts and bush fires are all part of this country’s eco system.

What’s changing seems to be the ferocity of such events, and what’s happening in northern NSW is a stark reminder of just that

While our thoughts are with the people of Taree, where the Manning River is at unprecedented levels, we also can’t help think about what may be in store for us in the next little while.

And with that kind thing in mind, we decided to look at the Top 5 weather events that seem ridiculous now but could suddenly happen.

Number 1. Rain so heavy even Campbelltown’s famous flood mitigation channel can’t cope.

Number 2. What? Snowing at Wedderburn and Kirkham?

Number 3. The next drought is so bad we start building more desalination plants up and down the NSW coast.

Number 4. Bush fires closer and closer to home.

Number 5. Earthquakes around here are rare, and of very low intensity, but the way things are going…
