Most people know Sue McGarrity from her work over two decades with local charity powerhouse 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Macarthur.

She has served the popular charity as deputy director and secretary since 2006.

A breast cancer diagnosis in 2005 was the catalyst for Ms McGarrity joining 24 Hour – she saw the advertisement for the charity while waiting for radiation therapy.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Last week, Sue McGarrity was named Campbelltown Local Woman of the Year, an honour given as part of the annual International Women’s Day celebrations.

And while the award was for her work for 24 Hour, Ms McGarrity also supported students with complex needs while she was a special education teacher for 15 years.

Campbelltown MP Greg Warren commended Ms McGarrity on the honour, after presenting her with the award, pictured above.

He said the award was recognition for the Park Central resident’s passion and the positive impact she has made in the Campbelltown area.

“Sue is a wonderful reflection of our Campbelltown community,’’ he said.

“Her dedication and selflessness are a testament to her character, and I am proud to announce her as the 2024 Campbelltown Local Woman of the Year.

“This is a well-deserved honour for Sue. Her commitment and ongoing contribution to the betterment of the local community will shape our society into a greater place,” he said.

“Sue is an inspiration for other women in the community to realise their potential and make strides to ensure Campbelltown is an empowering place for women to live, work and visit.”
