It’s a quick way for people on foot to get to Campbelltown station.
But a lot of people use the Hurley Street tunnel with a sense of trepidation.
Especially when it is empty of other people.
At least when it’s busy there is a “safety in numbers’’ feel.
But all that is about to change as Campbelltown Council sets out to make it brighter, safer and more welcoming to prospective users.
The project will include improved lighting, a non-slip floor and a noticeboard highlighting What’s On in Campbelltown.
The inside of the tunnel will be freshly painted and adorned with images of iconic Campbelltown sights and events.
But to do that the Hurley Street underpass, which connects Campbelltown CBD with the railway station, will be closed for a week in January.
The underpass will be closed from 10pm on Sunday, January 8 to 9am on Monday, January 16 while the lighting and floor work is undertaken.
The aesthetic improvements will be complete by the end of January.
Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic, said the refurbishment aimed to improve pedestrian safety and enhance the amenity of the area.
“The Hurley Street underpass is an important entry point to our city and we want to make a good impression on visitors, and encourage people travelling to or from work to use the convenient, safe link,” he said.
“The upgrade will include the installation of new LED lights on both sides of the tunnel and resin flooring which will be slip-resistant and easy to clean.
“Council also has plans to install surveillance cameras, which will be in addition to the existing CCTV cameras managed by Transport for NSW, as a further safety measure.
“Council apologises in advance for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of the underpass, and we look forward to opening a revitalised and more welcoming tunnel.”
Pedestrians are advised to cross Hurley Street at the signalised pedestrian crossing adjacent to the taxi rank during the closure.
