It’s time we got serious on tourism, says Morrison

We have not one but two rivers, says Cr Warren Morrison.

Councillor Waren Morrison wants to put Campbelltown on the tourism map. He has foreshadowed a notice of motion for next week’s council meeting that calls for a serious effort to boost the local visitor economy.

This is not the first time Cr Morrison has called for action on tourism, which he believes would be of great benefit to the local economy.

He wants council to provide a report that outlines the opportunities available to enhance our visitor economy.

He wants the report to also look into having a tourism expo or program that showcase our city’s unique attractions, “from the Nepean and Georges Rivers, Koalatown and the Billabong Parklands, to our sport, culture and history’’.

As part of the notice of motion, Cr Morrrison says that the Campbelltown Economic Development Strategy ought to include the steps required to increase our visitor economy.

And he wants local businesses, peak bodies, and neighbouring councils to work together to position the Macarthur region as a leading destination for local, interstate and international visitors.

“Look, we have so much to offer tourists, we just need to harness our attractions in an organized, strategic approach,’’ he says.

“Don’t forget that the Western Sydney International Airport will open next year, and that will also bring a lot of potential in this area,’’ he said.

Cr Morrison says a major eco tourism asset in Campbelltown local government area is the presence of not one but two rivers, the Georges and the Nepean.

Last month Cr Morrison called for regeneration of the Menangle Bridge recreational area of the Nepean River, which has been seriously damaged by flooding in the past four years.

This location used to be a popular swimming spot for locals and visitors, and Cr Morrison believes returning it to its previous state will also make it a tourist attraction.

“Tourism can help create jobs and boost a lot of businesses,’’ Cr Morrison said.
