Appin residents now have a great new park following the official opening earlier this week of Toggerai Park as part of the state government’s Parks for People program.

Located just north of Appin town centre, the 17-hectare park transforms former pastureland into a vibrant public space featuring walking trails, nature-based play areas, picnic facilities and open green space for the growing local community.

Delivered in partnership with the Wollondilly Shire Council, the park has been carefully designed to complement and protect the surrounding bushland and nearby koala habitat, while creating new opportunities for recreation, social connection, and outdoor activity.

Key features of Toggerai Park include one kilometre of walking trails, pedestrian access from Appin Road, dedicated car park and nature-inspired play spaces featuring a lyrebird play structure, flying fox and swings.

There’s also shaded picnic areas with barbecues, accessible amenities, bubblers, and preservation of existing native vegetation across the site.

The park’s design reflects extensive community consultation and celebrates the area’s Aboriginal heritage.

Its name Toggerai, the Dharawal name for the neighbouring Georges River, and the signature lyrebird play structure recognise the cultural significance of the site and the lyrebird as a totem of the Dharawal people.

Local MP and the Member for Campbelltown Greg Warren (pictured above) joined Wollondilly Mayor Matt Gould and planning minister Paul Scully to officially declare the park open this week.

“Appin is one of the fastest-growing communities in New South Wales and locals deserve the same quality green spaces as anywhere else in Sydney.

“Toggerai Park is exactly what this community has been waiting for – a place for families to come together, for kids to play and explore, and for residents to connect with the natural environment right on their doorstep.

“The Minns Labor Government is delivering for Appin, and I look forward to Toggerai Park becoming a cherished part of this community for years to come.”

The Appin community is invited to celebrate the opening at a free Community Day on Saturday, July 19, featuring a fun run, lawn games, children’s story time, and food and refreshments.
