Australia Day in Camden is a mixture of tradition and Australiana.

A quirky thong throwing competition, Australiana themed market and live cover band performing favourite Aussie hits are just some of the attractions at Camden’s Australia Day celebration this Thursday, January 26.

Australia Day in Camden highlights include:

• Free activities in John Street from 8am to 1pm including face painting, jumping castles, thong throwing competition, Australiana themed market stalls, roaming entertainment and cover band, Mad Rhino performing classic Aussie hits.

• Australia Day Thanksgiving Service at the Camden Civic Centre from 8.15am.

• Official civic awards and citizenship ceremony from 9.30am. Local Australia Da awards will be presented to the citizen of the year, young citizen of the year, sportsperson of the year, young sportsperson of the year, community event of the Year and Community Group of the Year.

• Macarthur Lions Street Parade along Argyle Street from 11.15am.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Lara Symkowiak said that Australia Day in Camden will be a wonderful community event and there will be something for everyone.

“The Camden community can unite in celebration, sharing a sense of local pride and Australian spirit,’’ Cr Symkowiak said.

“I am proud that Australia Day in Camden continues to offer the opportunity for our growing, diverse and vibrant community to come together and celebrate everything that makes our nation great, from our rich history to our contemporary culture.

“It will be an honour to welcome our newest citizens on Australia Day and present the prestigious Camden Australia Day awards to recognise our community heroes.

I congratulate all of the nominees for 2017.

“Thank you to both our 2016 citizen of the year, Keith Maddock, as well as our young citizen of the year, Kirilly White, for their continued commitment to our local community.

“I also look forward to welcoming our 2017 Australia Day Ambassador, motivational speaker and entrepreneur, Justin Herald, to join us in celebrating this important day,” Cr Symkowiak said.
