The son also rises: Jackson Willis orchestrates demolition job on Lions

Camden halfback Jackson Willis orchestrated a demolition of the Mittagong Lions as well as scoring four tries himself in the 64-10 rout.

Willis was really dominant in the opening half, scoring three tries in the space of 22 minutes as the Rams blew the Round 13 game wide open in the blink of an eye, reports MIKE SHEAN.

It was bitterly cold at Mittagong Sportsground, but young Willis was red hot and the home side had no answer to his magic spell.

Jackson is the son of Andrew Willis, who played first grade for Western Suburbs Magpies and is mostly famous for kicking a long range field goal after the hooter to win a match against North Sydney Bears in 1996.

Willis senior is currently reserve grade coach at Camden.

Willis the younger opened the scoring for the Rams on 10 minutes, before also adding the next two for the visitors, as they skipped out to an early 18-6 lead.

Geoff McKeown interrupted the scoring pattern for the Rams to give the Lions something to shout about when he finished a nice passage of play for the locals.

Camden responded by adding two more tries to their tally, courtesy of backrowers Jack Davey, who finished with a double, and Ben Powers.

Mittagong scored their final try of the day just before halftime, when captain Regan Economos crossed in the corner, making the score 30-10 in favour of the visitors.

The small but vocal home crowd had little to celebrate or shout about, especially when Camden winger Bailey King scored just after play had resumed.

Davey then scored his second, with Freddy Kini, Daniel Muir and Chris Browne, who kicked 10 of 11 conversions, also bagging tries as the scoreline blew out in the second half.

Browne was excellent with the boot, adding 20 points himself to his tally, finishing with a total of 24 on the day.

Mittagong struggled with injuries during the day, with their replacements, youngsters Byron Pinkerton and Josh Harrison in the backline and Rick Thorn in the forwards, doing their best against a far superior opposition.

The loss for Mittagong meant the Lions have now slipped down to seventh on the Group 6 Rugby League ladder.

It doesn’t get any easier next round when Mittagong host Thirlmere Roosters.

The other Round 13 results saw Oakdale score a 21-12 win over Picton at Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon.

The other Sunday afternoon game saw Thirlmere cement second spot on the ladder, with a 44-16 win over The Oaks Tigers at Thirlmere Sportsground.
