Youth unemployment has plummeted in his electorate, says the Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor.
He told parliament on Thursday that in Hume’s north, the outer south west of Sydney and Macarthur, the youth jobless rate had dropped by 5.6 percent in the past year, down to 7.8 percent.
“In the north, around Camden and Narellan, there’s been a big jump in retail jobs,’’ he said.
“More than 14,000 people are employed there in the retail trade, and that’s been a jump of 4,200 people in just one year.
“Healthcare and social work employ 18,400 people in northern Hume and in the past year this has jumped by 4,500 people.
“There’s still more work to be done, but these are fantastic outcomes,” Mr Taylor said.’’
In the southern part of the Hume electorate, around Goulburn and stretching south to Queanbeyan, youth unemployment had dropped three percent in 12 months, to sit at 7.5 percent.
The overall unemployment rate in Hume is one of the lowest of any electorate in Australia, at 3.2 percent.
“Every lever of policy from our government is pulling toward more jobs and better jobs,’’ Mr Taylor said.
Billions of dollars of the Government’s $75 billion infrastructure investment was happening in the Hume electorate, particularly around the Western Sydney Airport, and this was driving business and jobs.
“The construction sector in the north of Hume employs more than 14,500 people, and another 13,500 work in the manufacturing sector there,’’ Mr Taylor told parliament.
“This kind of job creation doesn’t happen by accident.
“Just last week, we delivered on a major commitment – helping one million more Australians into work, than there were when we were elected. 2017 was the best year on record for jobs growth.
“Our Budget will continue to build the platform for growth,” said Mr Taylor, who is pictured at left.
“Thriving businesses create jobs and give Australians opportunity to work, to save, to get ahead.”
