After winning an Anzac scholarship, Year 10 student Gabrielle Varnakulasingham says everyone should be interested in the history of Australia.
The St Patrick’s College for Girls Campbelltown student has been named as one of the recipients of the 2022 NSW Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship.
“I encourage everyone, especially people my age, to look into our country’s history and the sacrifice many have made for our nation,” Ms Varnakulasingham said.
“This scholarship will allow me to meet new people all while learning about Australia’s rich military history.’’
Ms Varnakulasingham said she was humbled to be one of just 20 recipients of the 2022 scholarship.
“I am honoured to be a part of such a great opportunity,” she said.
The teenager was one of 20 students from 125 applicants to be awarded a 2022 NSW Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship.
As part of the application process, Ms Varnakulasingham was required to write a 1000-word essay detailing why she should be awarded the scholarship.
As part of the scholarship, all of the recipients will take part on a two week learning tour in September to historical sites from Cowra to Darwin.
Member for Campbelltown Greg Warren has congratulated Gabrielle Varnakulasingham for her successful bid to win a “life changing and prestigious’’ scholarship.
Mr Warren, who is also the shadow minister for veterans and an Australian Regular Army veteran, said the teenager’s willingness to learn about Australia’s military history was pleasing to see.
“The only way the stories of our Anzacs and other Australian Defence Forces personnel will be told and remembered is by younger generations taking a keen interest and passing those stories on down the line,” he said.
“It is wonderful to see Gabrielle’s passion for all things Australian military.
“Once again congratulations Gabrielle on your successful application.
“I am sure the tour will be two weeks you will remember fondly for the rest of your life.”
