An unusual police operation last Friday focused on speeding in some of our newer suburbs.

Forty Macarthur region motorists, including a number of novice drivers, were detected speeding, during an unusual one day road policing operation.

It was unusual in that it was concentrated on some of our region’s newer suburban estates and areas.

Operation Knight was conducted last Friday, August 25 in the suburbs of Oran Park, Harrington Park, Gregory Hills, Gledswood Hills, Willowdale, Harrington Grove, Smeaton Grange, Narellan and Spring Farm

During the one day operation South West Metropolitan Highway Patrol officers conducted 90 mobile random breath tests and charged a 22 year old man with low range drink driving after a breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.055.

Legal action was also taken against the 22-year-old for driving with an expired licence.

Inspector Bill Darnell, who is the South West Metropolitan Region traffic tactician, said that Operation Knight was conducted in response to the growth in new residential areas across the Macarthur region.

“Similar operations are being planned across the South West Metropolitan policing region,” Inspector Darnell said.

Examples of inappropriate driver behaviour detected during Operation Knight included:

A male provisional licence holder was detected travelling at 84km/h in a 60km/h section of Oran Park Drive at Oran Park.

When the car was stopped, inquiries revealed his licence had expired.

A male learner licence holder was fined for exceeding the speed limit after he was detected travelling at 74km/h in a 50km/h area of Mount Annan.

His supervisor was also issued with an infringement notice for failing to supervise.
