The hum of community activity went up a notch or two last Saturday when 60 Zonta Club of Macarthur volunteers worked feverishly in the auditorium of Wests Tennis Club.
One of the key initiatives of Zonta since 2005, this year’s assembly afternoon produced an incredible 600 sterile birthing kits in just under two hours.
That’s 200 more than last year.
The kits will be sent to several countries in Africa and Asia to be distributed to pregnant women in villages to ensure they have a safe and sterile birth
There was a little spare time when the volunteers finished the kits so they also put together 44 breast care cushions for distribution in local hospitals.
Since 2010 Zonta Macarthur have been putting together these cushions, which help women who have had breast surgery.
A Zonta spokeswoman said this year’s assembly afternoon was a very successful one, attracting a lot of volunteers who had never participated before.
The 60 volunteers were mostly women and children, as well as one man.
“The children were amazing and Jeff was terrific with his wife Jane,’’ the Zonta spokeswoman said.
But now it’s back to business for Zonta Macarthur, with the club preparing for its next dinner meeting on Wednesday, August 22 at Wests Leagues club Leumeah.
Guest speaker Denise Pritchard will talk about the Days for Girls project, which provides quality sustainable feminine hygiene kits and awareness to girls living in poverty in over 75 countries across the world.
It’s a 6.45pm for 7pm start and the $30 per person includes a two course dinner and tea or coffee.
Everyone is welcome.
