Soils ain’t soils: making sense of test results

If your soil is struggling, everything else on your land will too, says Linda Dedovic.

Ms Dedovic is the coordinator of a workshop to help landholders make more sense of soil tests.

“Soil is our life support system, it provides anchorage for roots, holds water and nutrients,’’ she says.

“If you aren’t an agronomist, soil tests can be difficult to interpret.

“This workshop will help you be more informed about your soil test when getting professional advice.”

The free workshop will be held in Camden next month.

Ms Dedovic said the workshop would cover the basics of understanding soil test results and the ins and outs of identifying constraints.

Delivered by Greater Sydney Local Land Services, the event will feature an informative and interactive session from expert David Hardwick of Soil Land Food.

Mr Hardwick has more than 20 years’ experience as an agroecologist with a focus on rural landscapes, farming and food systems.

“David will give participants the opportunity to ask questions relevant to the soil on their land and their own individual experiences,” Ms Dedovic said.

Topics covered in the workshop will include

• Soil pH;

• Key nutrients such as Cation Exchange Capacity and cation balances, phosphorus, and sulphur;

• Soil constraints such as salinity, acidity etc;

• Options to improve soil fertility;

• Organic matter/carbon.

“We are asking attendees to bring along the results of a recent soil test so we can help examine the individual issues impacting their soils,” Ms Dedovic said.

The workshop will be held on Thursday, June 9 in Camden. Register online https://bit.ly/3cX2KKn
