Social media storm brewing over Camden Woolies coffee shop

No, thanks, Woolies: Steve Wisbey is sticking up for family cafes in Camden.

Not everyone appreciates social media, but the fact is it’s the best tool to get people talking about an issue anywhere in the world. And that’s exactly what happened when marketing guru and Camden local Steve Wisbey posted on Facebook his concerns about the impact of the local Woolies store going head to head with the family run cafes dotted around the beautiful township’s central business district. Wisbey got a big response to his plea to local coffee lovers to give the Woolies product a miss. And Wisbey also makes a point a lot of people agree with, just how big are Woolies and Coles going to be and will there be anything they won’t sell. And who can compete with these giants. It’s all there on Facebook if you want to go and have a look and maybe add your thoughts to it.

Gift of Time is the name of the ceremony held every year where council thanks the town’s volunteers. This year’s, held a few days ago, was a little different. Campbelltown Mayor Paul Lake wanted to really show his appreciation of his city’s volunteers and the value he places on their contributions, so he personally signed each certificate handed out at the ceremony. Nice one, Lakey.

Speaking of the mayor, at the last meeting of the council on Tuesday night he spoke of how proud he was to have attended a University of West Sydney graduation earlier in the week. It was wonderful to see 120 new local doctors graduating, our own doctors, how wonderful is that, he told council.

We jump from doctors to coppers: Our region has picked up 21 new probationary constables from the most recent graduating group from Goulburn, with five allocated to Camden and Campbelltown, seven to Liverpool, 1 to Green Valley and six to Macquarie Fields police station. Do you think the numbers should have been reversed: 120 cops and 21 new doctors?

  1. There was a time where I thought:”owning pubs and therefore owning pokie venues? No way that’ll be allowed to happen”. Then it was petrol stations. Be nice of they concentrated their efforts on making the bad elements off their business better (big box hardware anyone? ) instead of grabbing a relatively piddling income (in terms of their trading accounts) and hurting small businesses in their area.
Woolies shareholders in Camden could make some noise at the next AGM maybe?
