A seminar on how to connect young people to the workforce got the thumbs up from parents and students.

Elizabeth Holden, of Elderslie, was one of the parents who attended Monday night’s seminar in Narellan Library.

“It was very informative and all the speakers were good.

“I learnt a lot of things I wasn’t aware of,” Ms Holden said.

Year 11 student, Jayjay Nash, also found the seminar useful.

“I found out about areas in construction I had never heard of,’’ Ms Nash said.

“I also learned about hospitality and careers in hospitality.

The seminar was organised by Macarthur Careers, MWLP Linking Youth and the Narellan Library.

Experts on the panel for seminar

The panel consisted of representatives from Headspace, SWSi (South West Sydney Institute) TAFE, MG My Gateway, NSW Department of Industry and Western Sydney University College.

Carly Cosmo from SWSi TAFE spoke about the jobs of the future, pre apprenticeship courses, career readiness, traineeships and school based apprenticeships and traineeships.

Vicky Papageorgopoulos from Headspace highlighted the need for students to be mentally as well as physically fit.

Headspace counsellors are available – online and in an office – to help students rebuild self esteem and direction.

Julie Underwood from the NSW Department of Industry also spoke about the many benefits of young people undertaking traineeships and apprenticeships and how the NSW Department of Industry can help.

Adam Farmer from MG My Gateway explained what makes a good apprentice or trainee.

He also discussed how apprenticeships and traineeships work and the advantages of belonging to a Group Training Organisation.

Yanira Martin Giusti, of Western Sydney University College, talked about the pathways to studying there if a student doesn’t achieve the required ATAR.
