Works are now under way to construct two new heavy vehicle rest area acceleration lanes on Picton Road which will support greater traffic flow and vastly improve safety for all motorists.
Safety will be improved for all road users by helping trucks safely merge with traffic.
The project is funded under round five of the heavy vehicle safety and productivity program.
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has welcomed the project.
“The Federal Coalition has committed $2.28 million to fund this $4.56 million project, which will create new acceleration lanes for traffic allowing 3,400 motorists and 470 B-doubles a day to re-enter Picton Road safely,” Mr Taylor said.
“Currently, the exits from both rest areas are Give Way-controlled T-intersections with a speed limit of 100 kilometres an hour on Picton Road near both rest areas.
“By building new acceleration lanes, heavy vehicles will have the time and space to merge with flowing traffic, improving safety for all road users while enhancing travel times and freight efficiency.”
State Member for Wollondilly Jai Rowell said the NSW Government was providing $859,000 to complete additional safety improvements on Picton Road.
“These additional works will involve widening the road shoulders and installing a median safety barrier along Picton Road between the two rest areas,” Mr Rowell said.
Mr Taylor said the Turnbull Government was investing $75 billion in key infrastructure projects nationwide – including more than $2.5 billion in Hume – to improve road safety, reduce business costs and ensure local businesses get goods to market quickly and efficiently.
Completion of the Picton Road upgrades is expected by August 2018, weather permitting.
