Councillor wants roundabout at dangerous T-intersection

Even before he got elected to council in September last year, Khaled Halabi was calling for urgent action to make a busy T-intersection near Minto Heights safer for motorists.

His plea fell on deaf ears, but now that he’s a Campbelltown councillor he’s determined to do something about it.

Cr Halabi told the South West Voice this morning that he was so worried someone may get hurt in a crash at the Ben Lomond Road and Hansens Road T-intersection he would be asking council to act urgently.

“This is now a very busy part of Campbelltown, with thousands of cars using Ben Lomond Road and Hansens Road every week,’’ he said.

The route is used by residents who live in Minto Heights, Kentlyn, Ruse and Airds, all growing areas.

Cr Halabi speculated that when the signage was originally erected at the T-intersection many years ago there would have been substantially fewer vehicle movements.

He says the problem is that the Give Way signs are in place for motorists travelling north or south along Hansens Road.

But anyone travelling east along Ben Lomond Road, which is an 80km/h zone, can turn left or right into Hansens Road without giving way to anyone.

“The signs are the wrong way around now that there are large volumes of traffic in this T-section,’’ says Cr Halabi.

“It seems to me a roundabout would be the best and safest solution here – and put in as urgently as possible,’’ he said.

“I am really worried that we could have a serious incident here unless we act.’’

He will now take his concerns to senior bureaucrats on council, along with his suggestion of a roundabout to replace the Give Way signs.

“I hope that we can do this quickly enough before something happens,’’ he said.
