More to Rotary Sunrise club than community service

Rotary Club of Macarthur Sunrise has been serving the community since 1995.

“We organise and support many activities in our community,’’ says current president Sharon Cook.

“Each year we plan fundraisings events to support these activities, which can include high teas, fashion parades, cooking a Bunning barbecue and a variety of raffles.’’

Every quarter they organise a disco for adults with disabilities in a local community hall and provide a dinner and soft drinks.

Other service activities include:

  • Entering a team in the annual 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer, Macarthur, and also sponsor the event;
  • Raise funds and awareness for Rotary’s global “end polio eradication program’’;
  • Days for girls: a menstrual health program that provides sustainable hygiene products and vital health education to underprivileged girls. It includes kits hand made by members and shipped around the world.
  • Dolly Parton’s imagination library, a literacy program alongside local community playgroups that provides children up to five years with an age-appropriate book each month;
  • Rotary’s National Lamington Day: saying “thanks’’ to the front line workers of Macarthur;
  • Baby shower to raise funds for Christmas gifts, non-perishable food and vouchers for women’s organisation WILMA.

Sunrise meet every week on Wednesday at 7am at the Sugar Mint café on Blaxland Road, Campbelltown to plan community initiatives that make a difference locally and globally.

But it’s not just serious and worthy community service stuff at Sunrise Rotary.

“The last Wednesday of the month is a social night meeting,’’ says Sharon Cook.

“We could be just dining out, playing a game of barefoot bowls, going to the movies, or a game of ten pin bowls in the park.

“We are up for most things really!’’

Sunrise Rotary will be holding an information night on Wednesday, March 16 at Wests Leagues Club.

“Come along to find out about Rotary and network with members and friends of the Macarthur Sunrise Rotary club, to find out about the local and International projects that we are involved in,’’ Ms Cook said.

RSVP by March 9 via email at macarthursunrise@gmail.com or calling 0408 263 328.
