Rollercoaster with climax as good as Hollywood thriller

Jed Drew celebrates the goal by Valere Germain on Saturday night.

Late in the first half, and down 2-0 at home to Brisbane Roar, Macarthur FC looked headed for a drubbing in front of their fans last Saturday night.

But barely a minute from half-time everything changed when Kealey Adamson smashed the ball into the back of the Roar net.

The young defender was standing a few metres back from the throng of Brisbane defenders and Bulls attackers as the ball was crossed in.

Brisbane headed it out, but it went to Adamson, who volleyed and watched the ball hit a defender before sailing into the back of the net.

It was the 21 year old’s first ever goal and despite the Bulls trailing 2-1, his teammates helped him celebrate the milestone.

Nobody could guess at that stage what a rollercoaster the game would turn into in the last 45 minutes.

But five more goals and a 4-4 result thoroughly entertained the hearty souls who braved the elements to watch the game live at Campbelltown Stadium.

It’s probably too early to call it the match of the year, but it will certainly be a contender.

The climax itself, when Roar rescued a point in the 93rd minute via a Tomislav Uskok own goal, was worthy of a Hollywood thriller.

This was the second own goal by the Bulls, with Belgian defender Dino Arslanagić also being credited with that particular football sin.

With eight minutes to go, the Bulls were leading 4-3 after a goal by Valere Germain and were headed for an unbelievable victory – one for the ages.

The Bulls had scored to make it 3-3 just five minutes earlier, courtesy of a classic volley by Daniel De Silva that gave the Roar keeper no chance whatsover.

Brisbane had regained the lead 10 minutes earlier, and at 3-2 down in this wild west shootout, it looked like anything was possible.

After goals in the fourth and 29th minute, the visitors had gone to a 2-0 lead late in the first half, however Adamson’s goal put the home side back in the game.

Five minutes into the second half Tomislav Uskok headed in a brilliant cross from Marin Jakolis for the Bulls to go level on the scoreboard at 2-2.

And the it was on for young and old.

Let’s hope this Saturday’s round 7 clash in Victoria against Western United is a more traditional game of football.

The game kicks off at 6pm.
