If you’re under 35 and passionate about the local environment there’s no better time to be living in the Greater Sydney region.

But here’s something else to be even more excited about: an Intrepid Landcare Leadership Retreat is coming to the south west region next month.

The retreats, organized by South West Intrepid Landcare and Greater Sydney Landcare Network, aim to inspire and empower young people to step up and lead on issues that are important to them and the local community.

The Intrepid Landcare Leadership Retreat has been delivered in a number of locations across Australia resulting in highly motivated teams of young people who go out and seek opportunities in Landcare, which they design and drive for young people in the community.

“It’s an awesome way to bring like minded young people together around purpose,” explains co-founder of Intrepid Landcare Megan Rowlatt.

“I have been coordinating Intrepid Landcare projects in the Illawarra region since 2009 and we have created some epic projects in partnership with over 40 different groups and organisations to date,’’ Ms Rowlatt said.

“We now have 12 new networks across four states and territories which are driven by young people for young people.

“Landcare is seriously underrated as a volunteer opportunity, I can’t explain how rewarding and fun the journey has been for our volunteers.

“There’s no better way to give back and meet new people if nature is your thing.”

Intrepid Landcare projects provide an outlet for young people to have outdoor adventures and give something back to the local environment at the same time, with young people creating what this looks like.

The South West Sydney Intrepid Landcare Leadership retreat will be held over the weekend of December 8-10 at Wooglemai Environmental Education Centre, located on the edge of the Nattai National Park, between Mowbray Park and Oakdale.

Lucky participants will experience a jam packed adventure filled weekend of cultural experiences, hiking and exploring, mixed with unique self-discovery and leadership training which will contribute to their growth as local leaders in the environment space.

“We are excited to be working with Intrepid Landcare on this event,” says Elisha Duxbury, a Greater Sydney Landcare Network coordinator.

“As a young staff member supporting Landcare I can see the absolute benefit of connecting young people to the Landcare movement.

“In the short time I’ve been involved I’ve learnt so much about the local environment and am passionate about opening up more opportunities for other young people to experience what Landcare can offer.”
