A recent audit of Campbelltown bins found that almost 30 per cent of items in the average recycling bin – the one with the bright yellow lid – shouldn’t have been put in there at all.
The top three materials incorrectly placed in recycling bins were general waste, food, dirty paper and textiles, all of which should be put in the smallest of the three bins households have these days.
As a result, Campbelltown residents are being called on to brush up their recycling habits during National Recycling Week – November 9-13.
“The better we are at recycling, the more resources we can recover for future use and limit the amount of landfill that goes into our environment,” says Mayor George Brticevic.
“We know that people have busy lives and it can sometimes be hard to sort general waste from recycling, so we’ve made a wealth of easy to understand information available on our website to help you sort out which bin your rubbish belongs in,” Cr Brticevic said.
“Some simple tips you’ll find on our website include looking for the Australasian Recycling Label which tells you which bin packaging items should go into, and cleaning your recyclable items before placing them in the bin,” he said.
Throughout National Recycling Week, council will be sharing hints and tips across its social media channels to help people recycle and anyone with any questions can visit the mobile education van today at the Campbelltown civic centre, 10am to 2pm.
