Local babies like to snuggle up with a good book, according to statistics from Campbelltown City Council’s Books for Babies Program, which has given away almost 550 free books to the city’s youngest residents in the last six months.
The program, which was devised to support early literacy and learning in the community, is now in its tenth year.
Each new baby living in the Campbelltown Local Government area is entitled to a free Books for Babies package, which includes a high quality picture book, information about the benefits of reading to babies and the library services available for babies and young children. A Books for Babies carry bag and bib are also included.
Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Lake, said that council was proud to provide the Books for Babies packages to Campbelltown’s youngest residents.
“Our libraries offer a variety of services and programs for children. Reading to babies and young children is fun, and great for encouraging a range of skills including talking and listening.
[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“Our libraries have a year-long program of events to suit all ages and, with a large selection of children’s books, movies and music to borrow, you are never too young to become a member,” Cr Lake said.[/social_quote]
Council is committed to promoting the importance of reading to children, and with Children’s Book Week and The Reading Hour 2015 celebrated during August, local libraries have a busy schedule planned.
To celebrate Book Week – August 22-28 – there will be colourful displays and lots of free activities including Baby Read ‘n’ Rhyme and Storytime sessions for pre-schoolers.
In addition, every child and young adult who borrows a book during August 21-28 will go into a draw to win great prizes of book vouchers.
Complementing Book Week activities is The Reading Hour 2015, which will be held at HJ Daley Library tomorrow, Tuesday, August 18, from 6pm to 7pm.
This family PJ storytime session will be a fun-filled hour of stories and games, celebrating the joy of families reading together. Children are encouraged to come in their PJs and bring their favourite teddy bear!
Parents of new born babies living in the Campbelltown Local Government Area can collect the Books for Babies package from local libraries.
