The Rainbow Shoelace Project is coming to Campbelltown Mall. This Friday and Saturday, from 10am to 2pm, shoppers in the Mall will be able to create their own rainbow shoelace pack to take home and put on their shoes.

Participants will also have the opportunity to create a second pack to be donated back to the Rainbow Shoelace Project.

Campbelltown Mall is one of six Charter Hall shopping centres taking part in the Wear It Purple Day 2023 event.

The Rainbow Shoelace Project is a grassroots initiative started by 12-year-old Abbie Jane from Broken Hill.

Scared of being bullied for being queer, and knowing others may be feeling the same, Abbie began to give out beads to other kids who wanted to show their support.

The movement quickly spread, and now people all over the world are wearing rainbow shoelace beads to show their support for the LGBQTIA+ community.

“You normally see rainbows when you’re looking up, and when you’re experiencing homophobia and bullying you tend to look down, and by looking down and seeing those little rainbow beads on someone’s shoelaces it can just change your life, it can change the way you see the world,’’ says Abbie Jane.

Charter Hall regional marketing manager, Rhys Simonds, said the company “believes in a world where everyone can be proud of who they are and know that we’re proud to stand together with them.

“We are proud to be supporting the Wear It Purple message and advocating for an Australia where all young people are safe, empowered, and surrounded by people that support them,’’ Mr Simonds said.

“The Rainbow Shoelace Project is a simple way to make a big difference. When you wear rainbow shoelaces, you are sending a message of love and acceptance to the LGBTQTIA+ community.

“You are also helping to create a more inclusive world for everyone.’’
