On one of the last days before retiring, Governor General David Hurley and Mrs Linda Hurley spent an afternoon receiving – and gifting – quilts.
Thanks to Pauline James, state coordinator for the RSL NSW Auxiliaries – and long time Raby resident – the quilt gifts will be one of the things the Hurleys will take with them when they return to civilian life after June 30.
The gift exchanges occurred during afternoon tea last week at Admiralty House, Sydney.
Ms James says the beautiful quilts presented to the Hurleys were all made by ladies from this area.
“The Governor General asked for the lead light pattern from the lead light at Government House Sydney where he was NSW Governor,’’ Ms James told the South West Voice afterwards.
“From 2014 to 2019, Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley was patron of RSL Auxiliaries, and continued to be a tremendous support.
“To say thank you, Mrs Hurley was presented with a beautiful poppy quilt, made by Ann-Maree Jacobs. The cross-stitched poppy panels were made by Alison McKean and quilted by Kaye Brown.’’
There was a surprise in proceedings when Pauline James was called upon to accept a quilt.
As acknowledgement of her 15 years as state coordinator for the RSL NSW Auxiliaries, she was presented with a thank you for your service quilt by none other than Linda Hurley.
“That was a lovely touch,’’ Ms James said.
For readers who wish to see some of these thank you for your service quilts – including the one presented to David Hurley – visit the Camden Country Quilters Guild 32nd annual exhibition on August 2-4 at Gledswood Homestead.
There will be more than 100 quilts on display.
“Without the support of the Camden Country Quilters, none of the auxiliary’s quilt projects would be possible,’’ Ms James said.
