The Picton Magpies will be the sentimental favourite when they take on traditional rivals Camden Rams in this year’s grand final decider on Saturday at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
Heavy rain in June produced unprecedented flooding in Picton, causing massive damage to the town’s businesses.
For a few days rugby league was the last thing on the minds of Picton’s residents.
But once the town regrouped so did the footy club, who went on to win the minor premiership.
And just as things return to normal in the township, having their mighty Magpies once again in the Group Six grand final decider has injected a dose of excitement in Picton and across the Wollondilly Shire.
The excitement is no less palpable over the Razorback mountain where the Camden faithful believe their team will revenge last year’s loss to the “Mexicans’’ as Wollondilly Shire residents are affectionally called in the northern parts of the Macarthur region.
This is Picton’s fourth consecutive appearance in the decider and if they win they will become the first club to do so in Group 6 history.
Camden will have something to say about that come kick off time – 7pm – on Saturday night.
Someone else who will have something to say on this big day of rugby league in our neck of the woods will be Mike Shean and the rest of the Group 6 League Live team.
Shean says he and the team are looking forward to an exciting finale to the 2016 season.
“We’re very excited to be calling live local football for the local community,’’ Shean said.
“It’s been a fun, learning experience this season, and we’re excited ahead of what should be a brilliant day of football on Saturday at Campbelltown Stadium.
“We’ve got five matches across the day, and we’ll be calling at least four of those, and with an expanded team we’re all looking forward to seeing who can claim the premierships in the various grades.
“The first grade grand final between arch rivals Picton and Camden, will be a cracking affair, with Camden out to atone for last year’s loss to the Magpies,’’ Shean said.
“Picton will be looking to rewrite local history, and become the first local team to record four consecutive grand final wins in the competition’s history.
“We wish all teams the best of luck, and hope the best team can win on the day.’’
