[dropcap]C[/dropcap]omrades, the party’s back. Well, we’re not sure if it’s the Communist Party or just its posters which have started appearing around Campbelltown.
The one pictured here was on the wall of the Hurley Street underpass opposite Campbelltown railway station.
Apart from kick starting the old “Bill Posters will be prosecuted’’ and “reds under the beds’’ puns, there’s also the mystery of who is putting up the posters.
One theory is that a disgruntled former Greens Party member who now prefers the colour red may be putting them up.
We’ll let you know when we find out for sure who the comrade is.

[dropcap]B[/dropcap]ut it’s not just the comrades who are trying to add some colour to our public places – the Campbelltown CBD will soon be sporting a public art trail of 10 murals.
Each of the murals will feature a local who has made a special contribution to the area.
Council is hoping the 10 come from a variety of fields, including sport, art, Indigenous, community, business, politics, environment, volunteer, medical and education.
The murals will be created by a couple of artists, Marikit Santiago and Chez, and will be developed in partnership with the local community through a series of street art workshops to be held during the April school holidays.
Who would you nominate as one of the top 10 people who have made a significant contribution?
As for me, if there was a category for journalism I could nominate someone who’s been serving news in Campbelltown and Macarthur for more than 40 years, but that would be, well, self serving…
Other than that though, people like Paul Wakeling, Joe Masina, Cliff Barry, John Marsden, Gordon Fetterplace and Ian Porter come to mind as ones that would look right as the faces of Campbelltown in these murals.
If you’d like to nominate someone please visit www.campbelltown.nsw.gov.au/10faces by April 3.

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]nother face may very well be that of Margaret Appleby, who played such a massive role in establishing Lifeline Macarthur.
Margaret, one of the nicest people you would ever meet, was presented with a lifetime contribution award at Lifeline’s 40th anniversary dinner last Friday night.
One of the first people to rush up and congratulate her was our local member, Greg Warren, pictured here with her on the night.
“Margaret is just fantastic, a real Macarthur gem,’’ gushed our MP.
She most certainly is.

It was good to catch up with some old Liverpool friends at the Lifeline dinner, including Harry Hunt, Sam Cavallaro and Cr Peter Harle, who made the trek down to Campbelltown Catholic Club for the evening.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he next guest at the Greater Narellan chamber of commerce dinner will be John Hewson, who will forever be remembered as the man who lost the unlosable election in 1993.
Hewson was a very successful businessman before and after entering politics, but as the leader of the Liberal Party there haven’t been too many more heroic failures.
If you weren’t around, by the 1993 federal election Labor had been in power for more than 10 years and new Prime Minister Paul Keating was as popular as a shark at Bondi Beach.
The rest, as they say, is history, and maybe Dr Hewson may enlighten the members of the chamber on Wednesday, April 11 as to what really went wrong all those years ago.

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]ork was scheduled to start this week on erecting a new picket fence around the number two oval at Raby Sports Centre.
Once complete it will mean two great cricket grounds at the Raby centre, but locals may not be so happy about having to walk around it, instead of through it as many do at present.
The complex, which includes a play area, is very popular with families, either out walking, running or cycling.
It is one of the nicest public spaces in the entire area, so well done to Campbelltown Council for a sterling job.

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]nd while we’re on sport, it is disappointing that another great local venue, Campbelltown Sport Ground, is not being used for training by the Wests Tigers ahead of their round three NRL clash with Brisbane Broncos this Friday night.
We asked the club and they said that it was due to the short turnaround from the Melbourne match last Saturday.
Fair enough, but surely it would have been a good idea to acquaint some of the new recruits with one of their home grounds before they played there for the first time.
