Work has started on a new multi purpose outdoor youth space in Birriwa Reserve, Mount Annan.
The $1.47 million project – Birriwa Outdoor Youth Space – will feature:
• Adventure play equipment including a large climbing rope structure, 30m cable ride, 3m slide, sky surf, basket swings, board rider, air rider and rodeo board
• Passive recreation space and garden
• Outdoor table tennis
• Two fenced multi-purpose courts line-marked for basketball and football
• 121 new trees and landscaping
The need for outdoor youth spaces with adventure playgrounds was identified as a high priority in the 2014 Camden Recreation Demand Study.
Camden Council adopted Birriwa Reserve in 2014 as a location for a new youth space.
Council awarded the construction contract to Lamond Contracting Pty Ltd in December.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Lara Symkowiak said at the time she was delighted that works will soon start on this important project for young people in our community.
“There is a real need for recreation spaces for older children in our community.
“[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]Birriwa Reserve is a fantastic location due to the high population of young people in the surrounding areas, visibility by traffic and pedestrians and close location to other recreation facilities such as Mount Annan Leisure Centre and food outlets,’’ the mayor said.[/social_quote]
“The exciting new space will have four main sections and offer a great range of adventure style equipment catering mainly for 12-17 year olds, passive recreation spaces and attractive landscaping.
It will also complement the new multi purpose courts, existing cricket nets, sportsgrounds and amenities.
“I am proud that council is investing in our young people and providing the facilities that they need.
“Recently council upgraded John Peat Reserve in Camden and Currans Hill Park in Currans Hill with adventure equipment for older children to enjoy,” Cr Symkowiak said.
