Election ’25: our wonderful democracy solid as a rock

There was some talk that the campaign for last Saturday’s federal election was a little on the nasty side.

It has always intrigued me that so many people like to focus on that kind of thing.

In terms of all the parts that make up a campaign, from promising to do this or that, this “nastiness’’ has always been a tiny, tiny portion.

Personally, ever since a candidate, who shall remain nameless, pointed out to me that our coverage on a spate of election poster defacing was unworthy, I have stayed away from such tactics.

Apart from anything else these people like nothing better than for their nasty message to be amplified.

Nonetheless it’s true that candidates from all sides raised the “nasty’’ parts of the 2025 election.

But when you see a social media post from the Liberal candidate in Macarthur, Binod Paudel, that includes a picture of him (above) and his nemesis, Dr Mike Freelander, well, that hits any bad bits out of the park.

Congratulations on your victory, Dr Mike Freelander. It was a great campaign, and I truly appreciate the friendly and positive spirit throughout. Wishing you all the best in your future endeavours, the post said.

As for the 2025 election itself  a national level, that also calls for another tradition: accepting the result and the wisdom of the people, simply because they always get it right.

I saw some social media posts where people were angry and could not understand how their candidate had lost, etc.

Well, not here, not in these spaces.

I think it would be fair enough to give ourselves a collective pat on the back for our peaceful, democratic system, and the way a huge majority of us acts during election campaigns.
