In the past three months the Harlequins rugby club have given Campbelltown the kind of promotion that money just can’t buy.
The club took on the challenge of hosting two big sporting events at their home ground, Campbelltown Showground, one in November and the second last Saturday.
Remember that the Harlequins are the one and only rugby club in the entire Campbelltown.
Not having other rugby clubs to link up with did not deter the Harlequins.
Last November the NSW Waratahs and a Pacific invitational XV ran on to Campbelltown Showground to a deafening roar from a huge crowd that turned up.
The playing surface of Campbelltown Showground was in tip-top condition, as was the entire facility, which includes a members’ bar and balcony – all built by the club over the years.
Rugby heavyweights in Sydney were so impressed with the success of the day they asked the Harlequins to host another one – a women’s official trial between the Waratahs and the Brumbies.
This was held last Saturday and was another big hit, no pun intended, for this grand old club, which turned 50 a couple of years ago.
The important thing was that inner city administrators, coaches and other officials left Campbelltown impressed both with the facilities and the organisational efficiency of the Harlequins – not to mention the hospitality.
The club’s men’s first grade will again be taking part in the Illawarra rugby premiership competition, which starts in April.
The Harlequins women’s top side returns to the Jack Scott Cup, so all up this will be a big season for Campbelltown’s rugby club.
On Friday, March 15, the Harlequins will launch their season at Wests Leagues Leumeah between 12.30pm and 3.30pm.
Darren Coleman, the current Waratahs men’s coach will be the guest speaker.
Tickets are $95, which includes lunch and drinks. Tables of 10 are also available. If you’d like to support this great football club – and have a convivial Friday afternoon – phone Andrew 0404 829 099 or email campbelltownharlequins@gmail.com
