Ole! Slice of Mexican culture in Macarthur

Ole as Mexican culture comes to town.
Ole! Every table had these in the centre at the Kids of Macarthur Ball on Saturday night at the Cube.

Ole!

A little bit of Mexican culture dominated a big function room in Campbelltown on Saturday night.

It started with a poncho and a sombrero on each table at the Cube.

Which was no surprise because the guests had read their invitations which clearly stated the theme for this year’s Kids of Macarthur Ball was Mexican Fiesta!

But then MC for the night, Sean Berry, who once upon a time used to compile the Community Diary for me at the Macarthur Advertiser, drew a number from a barrel and it all became perfectly clear.

Sean, now a reporter with Channel 7 news, drew number 1 and anyone who had a program with that number on it won the Mexican gear.

But there was a condition: they had to wear the sombrero and the poncho all evening.

Within minutes you had 50 people in the room wearing a sombrero and a poncho.

And when they all got into the centre of the room for the pinata, well, it was like a scene from a Mexican movie.

As fundraisers go, and this was the first time I’d been to one, it was wonderful fun for a brilliant cause.

The money goes towards the care of children in our local hospitals and since its inception Kids of Macarthur has raised more than $2 million.

The CEO is Denise McGrath, who has been there since day one, while the board include solicitor Bruce Hanrahan as chairman and Paul Wakeling deputy chair, Tim Bryan treasurer, and one half of mighty Macarthur Engineering, the tireless Julie O’Keefe, as secretary.

They were all there along with other iconic Campbelltown and Macarthur names such as Tony Perich, Kevin O’Keefe, local politicians and many, many more.

So many in fact it just warmed your heart to see them all attending such a terrific event.

Ole!
