An oil spill in July was the catalyst that galvanised the local community to work together to tackle problems at the duck pond in Mandurama Reserve, Ambarvale.
As part of the response, a social media page was created as a place to alert others about any problems at the pond.
Now Mandurama Reserve is set to receive more official attention through the creation of a monthly Bushcare event to help residents stay on top of the problems at the duck pond.
Resident Alexander Visotin, who addressed Campbelltown Council on Tuesday night, told it problems include fishing lines, hooks and sinkers thrown in the water or left behind by irresponsible fishermen, creating a risk for children and pets.
Geese and ducks ingest the hooks and fishing lines, while poor water quality in the pond causes the death of fish and waterfowl, he said.
Mr Visotin was one of three residents to address council when it dealt with a notice of motion from Cr Jayden Rivera, calling for upscaled action on the duck pond, including council involvement.
Councillors supported Cr Rivera’s request for a report on the expansion of the Bushcare program to Mandurama Reserve and the duck pond.
The report will look into the approach by council in similar situations across the local government area.
Cr Rivera also won support for council to look into holding community forums every quarter.
In other notices of motion, there was support for Cr Masood Chowdhury’s call for a report on the extent of graffiti in Campbelltown, and community awareness campaigns to discourage it in the future.
There was enthusiastic support for Cr Ash Rahman’s motion on the provision of more accessible drinking water taps and fountains across the local government area. He was also supported for his call for a report on the feasibility of a pedestrian crossing at Macquarie Road, Macquarie Fields, opposite the electricity substation.
