Campbelltown MP Greg Warren and opposition roads spokesperson Jodi McKay have launched a petition on Appin Road.
They were joined by members of Help Save Appin NSW Inc. to launch the petition, which is calling on the NSW Government to urgently fund upgrades to the road, including the installation of safety barriers, additional lighting and widening of the road.
Concerns about the road have been growing within the community following two fatal accidents so far this year, bringing the number of people killed on this road to 35 over the last 20 years.
Ms McKay and Mr Warren said they welcomed the curve realignment works currently under way at Bulli Tops, but said that much more would be required to keep motorists safe on Appin Road.
“We have seen far too many lives lost on this dangerous road, and people in Campbelltown rightly expect the Government to take action to keep them safe when travelling on Appin Road,’’ Mr Warren said.
“For too long we’ve seen too much talk and no action, which is why I’m launching this petition calling on the Baird Government to act now.

His words were echoed by Ms McKay:
“The death toll on this road just keeps rising – it’s simply not good enough for the Government to sit back any longer,’’ Ms McKay said.
“These upgrades are desperately needed and they are needed now.
“There are so many local residents who use this road each and every day, and they deserve better from this Government.”
I welcome any upgrade of outdated roads like Appin and Heathcote roads but that is only part of the equation.
Driver behaviour, attitude and skill must surely rank well above the roads and their conditions.
Drive within you capabilities, obey the speed limits at all times and be courteous whilst out and about, this will go a long way to fewer unnecessary tragedies.
